My Story
I graduated college in December of 2008 with a degree in Finance… right when the financial market completely crashed. GRREAT. I owed about $35,000 in student loans and a car loan.
I remember walking into my financial professor’s office saying, “What should I do about this whole job-thing?” In college I interned with an Inc. 500 company selling home security systems.
It was direct sales, as in face to face…. Or door-to-door. My professor said, “Why don’t you start your own security company?” I couldn’t think of a reason why not. Well, there was one thing. Who was going to install the security systems?
At the start of a recession I rolled up my sleeves and started my own company selling and installing security systems.
With a lot of hustle, I paid off $35,000 in debt and had a nest egg of over $100,000 by age 26.
One day on my way to my office (AKA Barnes and Nobles), I passed by an investment firm and pulled in. I said, “Hi, I’m Carly I want to be a financial advisor.”
If I could pay off debt and build savings at a young age, then I knew anyone can with a little education and a plan.
I started interviewing to become a financial advisor.
One company asked me why I wanted to be a financial advisor. Bright-eyed and naive I said, “I want to educate people about money.”
Quickly the reject letters rolled on in. I found out the hard way that in the investment world they want you to bring in high net worth clients to sell investments and insurance. I wanted to help everyday people manage money.
Plus, managing money isn’t just about having a diversified portfolio.
It’s about having a diversified life: being a bridesmaid in your best friend’s wedding, backpacking Asia, and having the ability to tackle an unexpected trip to the ER.
With coffee in hand and my laptop I took what I learned studying Finance and my personal experience as a millennial to create Best Money Class Ever, a 4–week personal finance class taught online across the world.
Since then I’ve been a guest speaker with over 65 organizations and over 2000 people have been a part of my class and live events.
