It’s easier than ever to not be content. Forbes shows that using social media sites are linked to depression, low self-esteem, and jealousy. The article goes on explaining the new psychological phenomenon of “social comparison.”
You see the “highlight reels,” of other people’s relationships, cute babies, promotions, and vacations.
The Best Way to Be Content in Life
If you want to be content in life: make peace with who you are.
Until you make peace with who you are, you’ll never be content with what you have.
There is no relationship, trip, possession, or job that will bring you contentment. First, inside you must be at peace with who you are as a person.
Do you value yourself? Have you accepted yourself for who you are? Not when you get the promotion, when you get out of debt, or even retire. Max Lucado said, “You are valuable because you exist. Not because of what you do or what you have done, but simply because you are.”
Envy Kills Contentment
If you’re constantly looking at what other people have envy kills your ability to be content in life.
One of my favorite bloggers, Marie Forleo, always says, “The world needs that special gift that only you have.”
Every person on the planet is equipped with talents, skills, and a unique personality that when you get envious of others, you kill the contentment and enjoyment of the gifts that you do possess.
I’ve found that debt-free people don’t care what other people think or have. So what, if you have the newest phone, or particular brand of clothes?
Everyone’s a Hot Mess at Times
It seems like everyone has “it all together.” The truth is, we’re all hot messes at some point in our lives (me included!). Life is hard, and life is NOT fair.
Especially if you’re currently suffering (you name it: sickness, death in the family, job loss, debt, etc.), again, be content in your suffering by making peace with who you are. Suffering ultimately produces endurance, builds hope, and establishes your character.
